Greetings, all!
If you refer to my last post, you’ll remember that I have been relatively quiet on the blog lately because of some personal life crazies that have been going on. In case anyone is wondering, I am still apartment/house hunting. It’s progressing, but still a process. But I’m not here to talk about that.
I am here today to talk about CURRICULUM.
Good HEAVENS, there are so many options out there for curriculum. If you work at a preschool—and ESPECIALLY if your preschool is relatively small—there are many kinds of curriculum you can purchase monthly, or yearly. Some might come recommended by your state boards of education. Some are just depending on your personal taste as a teacher or director. Some are all-inclusive, with even crafting supplies included! And some are the bare bones that you can supplement in your own way.
I am in a kind of unique and cool situation. My preschool is just small enough that I can take the time to plan all of my own curriculum from one month to the next.
I’ll break it down for you, so you can get a picture of what it’s like.
At the end of a given month, you’ll find me sitting in my office, a calendar in front of me, choosing and planning educational themes for the next month that is about to begin. We have a different theme every week. Plus we have a different letter of the alphabet every week that we focus on.
Once I have picked out the themes and letters for the coming month, I type them all out in a monthly newsletter that goes home with all of the parents (more on newsletters and templates in a later post!).
Then, every week, I refer to my list, and I get all of my worksheets, coloring sheets, crafts, writing prompts, special books, and activities in order for the upcoming theme.
Some great themes that we’ve had in the past have been:
-Outer Space Week
-All Around the World Week (learning about other countries)
-Dr. Seuss Week
-Transportation
-Weather/Precipitation
I could go on and on. Truly. Forever. I LOVE picking and planning my own curriculum. Throughout most of the year, we have more serious educational topics. Sometimes in the summertime, when our numbers are a little lower and people are coming and going on their vacations, we do more fun themes.
And THIS is one of those weeks.
This week, our theme happens to be:
DRUMROLL, PLEASE……

EVERYTHING SUPERHEROES!
I was born ready for this week. I was made for it. I LIVE FOR IT.
I am the biggest superhero nerd in the entire wide multiverse. And I am not ashamed of that.
We’ve been having a blast this week! Along with focusing on our letter of the week (which is Hh, in case you were curious), we’ve been painting superheroes, making our own superhero logos with our names on them for tracing, answering superhero writing prompts, talking about who our favorite heroes are and WHY.
We’ve also had a great opportunity at our morning circle time to talk about the fact that the superheroes we watch, or read about in comics, are only characters that are fun. BUT their job is to help and protect people, and keep them safe. And there ARE people in real life who are heroes because they do that in their jobs too—law enforcement, paramedics and doctors, military, and even parents!
Also, I’m pretty stoked, because tomorrow is our Super Day. Which means everyone, teachers included, can dress up as their favorite superhero, whether it’s a full costume, a shirt, a mask, a cape, etc. More to come later on my outfit of choice for tomorrow. But I can’t wait! I know my kids are excited to get to be superheroes for a day, and so am I!

Who is YOUR favorite superhero?
I’m a Superman fan for life. And also The Flash.
And also, what kind of curriculum do you use at your school, or even with your kiddos at home?
Drop some knowledge on me in the comments.

I will have to share this site with my daughter. She is in college studying to be a teacher and she also is a paraprofessional at a charter school at the moment. She does the reading section and this year she wants to do something with superheros.

Absolutely! Share away! That is wonderful. I feel like there are so many different things you can do with superheroes, and different directions you can take that theme in.
